We believe that human sexuality and reproductive health must be viewed positively, free from judgement and violence.
Yayasan Gemilang Sehat Indonesia (YGSI) – formerly known as Rutgers Indonesia – is a non-profit organization that works on two major issues, namely: Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, and Gender-Based and Sexual Violence. The foundation, which was established as a result of the separation with Rutgers International in the Netherlands, officially operates from January 1, 2024.
We begin a new chapter in our journey as Yayasan Gemilang Sehat Indonesia with the determination to continue the struggle that we have been working towards for the past 25 years.
We will continue to be committed to advocating and fighting for sexual and reproductive health rights, as well as against sexual and gender-based violence, with a special focus on young people, including minority groups and people with disabilities, as well as ensuring every individual has full and non-discriminatory access to their rights.
Before changing our name to Yayasan Gemilang Sehat Indonesia, we worked under the name Rutgers Indonesia, – which in 1997 was known as the World Population Fund (WPF). WPF is a leading non-governmental organization (NGO) that has been a strong advocate for sexual reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and the prevention of gender-based violence (GBV) in Indonesia.
In 2011, there was a merger between WPF and Rutgers Nisso, which led to a name change to Rutgers WPF Indonesia. Another significant change occurred in 2017, where Rutgers WPF Indonesia again changed its name to Rutgers Indonesia and worked under the coordination of Rutgers International in the Netherlands.
In 2023, Yayasan Gemilang Sehat Indonesia was born as a result of the split between Rutgers Indonesia and Rutgers International.
YGSI works by sharing its expertise, ranging from comprehensive reproductive health and sexuality education, developing modules, encouraging policies related to sexual and reproductive health rights, and comprehensive sexual and gender-based violence, providing information on youth-friendly sexual and reproductive health services, and supporting the fulfillment of the sexual and reproductive health rights of the community without exception.
Yayasan Gemilang Sehat Indonesia combines organisations’ strengths by focusing on four interlinked pillars in its work: Grant Management, Programme Implementation, Research and Advocacy.
