Pak Sumanto and Sari: From Hesitation to Blessing

Pak Sumanto, a humble man working as a security guard, initially did not understand why his daughter, Sari, was so interested in the CIKAL program. When he first heard that his child would be involved in issues regarding sexual and reproductive health, his mind was filled with questions and worries. How could a teenage girl discuss things that had always been considered taboo? What was the benefit? Would this have a negative impact on Sari’s future?

Here is the translation of the next part of the story, focusing on Pak Sumanto’s internal shift and his pride in Sari’s growth:

However, one thing Pak Sumanto always taught his children was the importance of expanding one’s horizons. Although he himself did not fully understand the topics discussed in the program, he allowed Sari to continue her journey.

“As long as it’s positive,” he said. “Instead of just being on her phone all the time, it’s better for her to learn something new.”

An Unexpected Transformation

As time passed, Sari became increasingly active in CIKAL activities. She traveled to various cities, including Medan, Bogor, and even Jakarta, to participate in training and discuss Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) with other youths.

Pak Sumanto began to notice a significant change in his daughter. Sari, who used to be shy, was now more confident speaking in front of large crowds. She frequently shared her knowledge with friends in the village and even had the courage to serve as the MC for recitation events at the mosque. Pak Sumanto could not hide his pride.

“At first, she was timid, but now she is brave enough to speak up. She also often teaches the younger children in the village,” he said.

This transformation did not just change Sari; it also opened Pak Sumanto’s eyes to how vital education is for young women.

A Lesson for a Father

Sari did not only learn from CIKAL; she also taught her father many things. Pak Sumanto, who once viewed sexual education as a taboo subject, now sees it as something essential. He realized that ignorance could have fatal consequences for a child’s future.

“There are so many incidents in the news where children who don’t understand the risks end up becoming victims,” he said. “It is better for them to know now, so they can protect themselves.”

From a father who was initially full of doubt, Pak Sumanto has now become his daughter’s primary supporter. He even encourages other parents to be more open with their children.

“Don’t consider it taboo, because this is essential knowledge for their future,” he advised other parents.

Hopes for the Future

Now, Pak Sumanto no longer hesitates when Sari mentions wanting to join a new activity. He even proudly handles her school permits whenever she needs to leave for training or seminars. To him, Sari is not just his child; she is part of a major transformation currently taking place.

“I hope more parents come to understand this as I have. So that our children can grow up with better knowledge and awareness,” he said, filled with hope.

From a hesitant father, Pak Sumanto has become a part of the change. He has learned that being a parent is not just about providing food and shelter, but also about supporting children to become the best versions of themselves.

The significant transformation experienced by Sari and Pak Sumanto is inseparable from the role of YGSI, supported by the Right Here Right Now 2 (RHRN2) program. Through collaboration with partners like CIKAL, YGSI has opened safe and educational spaces for teenagers to understand and advocate for their sexual and reproductive health rights. This program does not only impact youths like Sari; it also reaches parents, teachers, and the involved communities. This comprehensive support is what drives social transformation—from taboo to transparency, and from hesitation to blessing. (*)
